2019 Shiraz Viognier

Shiraz Viognier 2019

Warm and dry and some well-timed summer rain.

Canberra District did not escape the effects of the drought that gripped much of NSW. Low winter rainfall and a similarly dry spring meant that irrigation systems (in Clonakilla’s case bore fed drippers) were given a thorough work out.

A fortuitous 77mm rain in January followed by 32mm in February not only saved the vintage but set the vines up to deliver some intense, bright fruit characters.

Yields were down around 15-20%.

Shiraz was picked between 13.5 and 14.5 baume.

6% Viognier.

18 months in barrel.

Deeply aromatic, opulent and powerfully ripe. Plush tannins and layers of dark fruit deliver a robust palate and serious cellaring potential.

Some argue this is Australia's greatest red wine, it is certainly one of the greatest Shirazs
