Clonakilla had a wonderful vintage in 2016. We kept a small volume of two of our key Shiraz Viognier parcels separate and gave the wines an extra 12 months in barrel before bottling.

The first wine comes from the lower section of T&L Vineyard Block One. (The top section produces the Clonakilla Syrah.) This wine is made in classic Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier style incorporating 22% whole bunches and 6% Viognier.

‘Wonderful effortless seamlessness and harmony of rose hip, red cherries and pepper, with beautifully restrained subtle exotic spice. Texturally it’s a marvel, with finely structured tannins that tap its granitic soils, and yet with a silkiness and seamlessness. The finish is profound, gliding, fragrant and alluring for minutes. It is, resoundingly, one of the greatest wines to emerge from one of the finest estates in the country.’

The Western Vineyard is the from the seven rows of Shiraz just to the South of the main winery building, planted in 1990. For this wine we tipped whole Shiraz bunches directly into a fermenter and used only human feet to crush enough grapes to enable a natural fermentation to start. 6% Viognier grapes were co-fermented and the wine was matured in 100% new French puncheons (500L) for two years.

‘100% whole bunch makes for a tense, spicy, smoky style, heightening its white pepper and firm, superfine tannin structure. 100% new oak amplifies this further, with firm, fine oak structure… there are certainly exciting things in store. It carries a core of spicy, peppery shiraz viognier of great persistence.’

If you were lucky enough to taste them at one of our Clonakilla dinners this year, you know they are something special.
