2021 Ceoltoiri

Clonakilla is a family winery, established in 1971. Our wines draw their character from the granite soils and cool, continental climate of the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales.

Ceoltóiri (pronounced “keel-toy-ree”) is Irish for “musicians”. The Kirks love playing music, Irish and otherwise. It’s a joy to hear each instrument working to produce a harmony, a complete whole.

2021 in the Canberra District was marked by a cooler than average Summer and regular falls of rain. A more European vintage perhaps. The cool season and longer ripening period have given us striking, detailed aromas and gentle tannins.

“wow, this is beautiful” – Campbell Mattinson

The Ceoltoiri is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, Shiraz, Counoise, Cinsault and Roussanne from a one acre block right next to the windmill at the top of the Clonakilla estate.

This is a joyous wine. It has an energy, a lift. It’s riddled with spice and florals and it has the requisite drive of red-berried fruit but it’s the way tense acidity/tannin plays with the flavours themselves that really just makes you lean back and say,

wow, this is beautiful

There are walnut aspects here too, in the context of exquisite balance, and a general confident push of spice-riddled flavour through the finish.

It’s a ripper

This is not a big wine, it’s frisky, almost light, but it has that “both less and more” thing going on where its presence extends beyond its weight. No hesitation on this one. It’s a ripper.

Campbell Mattinson, Winefront

Medium to full red/purple colour, with a spicy, minty, ‘eucalypt forest floor’ bouquet, while the palate is medium-bodied and spicy, elegantly weighted and styled,

delicious medium-bodied but intense red, with a spicy Rhône-ish personality

with mild but positive tannins in excellent harmony with the rest of the wine. A delicious medium-bodied but intense red, with a spicy Rhône-ish personality.
