2019 Syrah

Every year at Clonakilla we fill a single fermenter with pure Shiraz from the higher portion of our North-East facing T&L vineyard. Whole berries are fermented warm by their own native yeasts. The wine spends a month macerating on skins and twenty-two months in French oak puncheons.

“Stunning. Beautiful wine to drink.” – Mike Bennie, Winefront

The weather leading up to vintage 2019 was marked by lower than average rainfall in Winter and Spring. Two rain events in January came just in time, delivering 110 mm between them.

The grapes ripened majestically and were picked in perfect condition on March 6.

The 2019 Syrah is a benchmark for this label.

So silky, so satiny, pretty perfume, floral, rose water, cherry juice, raspberry and faint vanilla. Sweeter profile but there’s this fine lick of alpine herbal character, sweet/smoky paprika spice and light, game meat throughout. So very much detail.

Stunning. Beautiful wine to drink. Memorable

The wine builds through its glide and tannins start dragging in quietly until the long finish unfurls with a lavish pucker. That texture. Gossamer. Stunning. Beautiful wine to drink. Memorable.

Mike Bennie - Winefront

Medium intense ruby colour in the glass with a purple tint into the rim. The nose is subtle yet alluring with sweet raspberries, clove and cinnamon spices and an underlying dark slate minerality. The wine sits on the palate with a lightness that surprises considering the intensity that lurks beneath.

there’s not a hair out of place in this wine

The tannins provide a supple and light guiding hand as to direct the flow, with a brightening acidity adding to the structure. There’s not a hair out of place in this wine as it rolls extremely long and lingering in the finish.

Stuart Knox - The Real Review

This is really astonishing: the flavours, the texture and the depth of this wine, without it ever moving much beyond medium bodied. It is not trying to be flash.

this is really astonishing

It’s in its own comfort zone, full of florals, ripe fruit and an array of spices. It’s an exercise in texture though. Very fine, velvety tannins sashay across the palate, which extends out, adding more fruit flavours, savoury tones and well-integrated oak along the way.

velvety tannins sashay across the palate

Long, decisive and a pleasure to taste.
