“The Canberra district’s Clonakilla winery has an enviable reputation for fragrant shiraz, straight or blended with small amounts of viognier. At their best, they are among Australia’s best red wines.
Pinot noir has always been a slightly lesser light, without quite the consistency of the others, but proprietor Tim Kirk has persisted. This edition may be the best yet – an example of how pinot can reward the patient winemaker perhaps.
It opens with a delicate, cherry-scented aroma, but foresty and herbal undercurrents emerge to add savoury dimension to the nose. The palate is fine, silky, and deceptively gentle at first, but there’s a solid tannin structure woven through it to give power and potential longevity.“
