New reviews – 2016 Riesling

Three recent reviews of the 2016 Riesling:

Pale straw-green; accelerates continuously from the first floral whiff through to the aftertaste; the mid-palate progressively builds ripe lime flavours as the wine is retasted, but is matched by the flinty acidity of the finish and lingering aftertaste. Sustained by that acidity, it has an outstanding future. – James Halliday

Bright, light straw colour with green tints. The aromas are scintillating fresh, clean, bright and lifted. Citrus blossoms. Very delicate on the palate as well as nose. Restrained, refined, subtle and clean. A slight saltiness to finish. – Huon Hooke

Mid-30s ripening temperatures generally drive down grape acidity levels. However, Tim Kirk believes 90mm of rain ahead of 2016’s February–March heat wave gave the vines resilience to produce intense riesling flavours and the lowest pH in Clonakilla’s history. Beautiful floral and citrus varietal aroma and flavour, a gentle, round palate and brisk finish mark this a special wine to enjoy over the next decade. – Chris Shanahan
